50Hertz is responsible for the operation, maintenance, planning, and expansion of the 380/220 kilovolt transmission grid throughout Eastern Germany and Hamburg. Our grid covers an area larger than 109,000 km² and runs a length of approx. 9,700 km – the distance from Berlin to Rio de Janeiro. It is the technical backbone that reliably supplies power to more than 18 million people – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
As of May 19 2010 50Hertz has new shareholders. Belgian Transmission System Operator Elia holds a 60 per cent interest in 50Hertz Transmission, 40 per cent share went to Australian infrastructure fund Industry Funds Management (IFM).

50Hertz Transmission Presents Feasibility Study on Grid Solution for Baltic Sea
The Study "Kriegers Flak Combined Grid Solution" analyses the technical feasility of a grid solution connecting offshore wind farms in the Baltic Sea between Germany, Denmark and Sweden. 50Hertz Transmission realized the study in cooperation with their project partners Energinet.dk and Svenska Kraftnät.

Intraday trading was expanded to cover the entire Czech-German grid border on 16 April 2008.

Test operation for cross-border intraday trading between CEPS, a.s. and 50Hertz
CEPS, a.s., transpower and 50Hertz are currently making preparations for cross-border intraday trading at the entire grid border between the Czech Republic and Germany. In the transitional period until (prospectively) the end of March 2008, the trial operations for cross-border intraday trading run to date at the common grid border of CEPS, a.s. and 50Hertz will be continued.
